Semper in excreta sumus solum profundum variat
I always knew I was a frustrated classic scholar.
For those of you denied a classical education, this wonderful Latin aphorism says it all for me
Always in the shit – only the depth varies
It struck me as particularly apposite to my condition.
Devotees of my work ( not enough of you yet !) will know where I’m coming from. One of my lingering ‘beefs’ is the way mental illness makes you the default Patsy for others bad behaviour.
As I once said to my ex wife, ‘darling I always know where I am with you, I’m either heading into the shit, I’m already in it, or I’m coming out of it’
I remember feeling rather proud of my on the spot epithet.
It was bloody true as well, and speaking to others with my condition, blame transference is another indignity forced upon us. If we had been around in the 16th Century we’d have been pursued by The Bipolar-Finder General and no doubt burnt at the stake. One could imagine the take on it – like the fabled ‘Ducking Stool’ – if you drowned you were innocent. Hmmm! So maybe if we were in euphoric mood we’d have been, and if deeply depressed, they’d have helped us on into the hereafter!
So I suppose there are some advantages to life in the 21st century.
When you’re depressed it’s amazing what you cling to.
If you are in the shit today I hope it’s only ankle deep.
Have a good one!
